PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION...

The results of our annual photo competition were announced on Friday 9th October at the AGM - 13 people entered and our judges had some 40 pictures to sift through. As before, there were two separate categories – each judged by a different panel.

The Technical Excellence Award was judged by Peter – a winner of several photographic awards and with over 40 years’ experience behind a camera.

The second category is The Spirit of Rambling Award judged by Pete and Maggie – Keen amateur photographers with a love for travel and wild places.

The results (with judges' comments) of the Technical Award were:

3rd place – Castle Howard, sent in by Anita:

1

“A worthy attempt at a different perspective of what must be an over-photographed view. I like the parallel curves, drawing a comparison between the urn in the foreground and Vanbrugh’s dome.”

2nd place – The Lonely Tree, sent in by Paul C:

4

“Colour photography like painting is all about colour and form. Throw in the variations of texture and we have an image of a compelling landscape – well done.”

The winner was…. Winnets Pass at Sunrise, sent in by Ray:

2

“My attention was taken immediately by this photograph of a limestone landscape and especially by the strong colours. What makes this work so well is the blocks of colour and the alternating gradients - like much excellent landscape photography this is almost abstract. The colours cast by the morning light reinforce the point. Right place, right time.”

The Judge also wished to congratulate Paul C for his picture of a Robin, saying....

3

“This is a technically competent close-up with narrow depth of field and a background that does not detract from the subject.”

The Spirit Of Rambling Award.

3rd place - Legs Akimbo, sent in by Karen:

“A good ramble consists of more than just exercise and companionship – a sense of humor adds to the experience and if someone is daft enough to lay down and point to heaven with his leg – say no more!”

2nd Place - The Windy Moor, sent in by Angela:

“We love this picture of a dry-stone wall, foxglove and clouds scudding along in the wind. A worthy 'stand-and-stare' moment on any ramble.”

The Winner – We do love to be beside the seaside, sent in by John:

5

“A lovely picture of happy hikers at the Yorkshire Coast. What better way could you convey the extensive physical, social and mental health benefits of hiking in good company.”
